Ministerial Appointments to Boards—Higher Education Sector

24 January 2020—Invitation for Expressions of Interest

The Minister for Education and Skills Joe McHugh T.D. and the Minister for Higher Education Mary Mitchell O’Connor T.D. today invited expressions of interest for a number of vacancies to governing authorities of higher education institutions.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced persons for consideration for nomination as ministerial appointees to:

Previous Ministerial Appointments as Chairs and Members of Boards in the Higher Education Sector

In February 2015, expressions of interest were sought by way of a public advertisement on for vacancies arising on boards and governing authorities in the higher education sector over the next two years.

The Public Appointments Service also placed a link to the advertisement on and persons registered with the Public Appointments Service were notified of the existence of the advertisement.

You can view a copy of the advertisement and application form here

Following a review of the procedure, it has now been determined that the process for appointing a Chairperson of a Governing Body of an Institute of Technology should be aligned with the current procedures in place for the filling of State Board vacancies. Accordingly, effective immediately, any vacancies currently existing or arising in future for the position of Chairperson of a Governing Body of an Institute of Technology will be administered through the Public Appointments Service (PAS). Therefore, in order to apply for a position as Chairperson of the Governing Body of an Institute of Technology you should register your interest with the Public Appointments Service (PAS) on their website

In February 2015, expressions of interest were also sought by way of a separate public advertisement on for vacancies arising on the governing boards of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.
