Who we are...
The Gaeltacht Education Unit in the Department of Education is responsible for overseeing and supporting the staged implementation of the Policy on Gaeltacht Education 2017-2022 to ensure a quality Irish-medium education in schools recognised as Gaeltacht schools. Through the Gaeltacht education policy implementation process, the Department aims to support and enhance the role of primary schools, post-primary schools, and early-years’ educational settings in each of the language-planning areas in the Gaeltacht.
In implementing the Policy on Gaeltacht Education 2017-2022, the Gaeltacht Education Unit will work closely with relevant sections within the Department of Education and other relevant agencies and organisations including An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta (COGG), national support services for schools, the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA). The Gaeltacht Education Unit will be supported by the Department of Education Inspectorate who will work with schools to support the implementation of the Policy on Gaeltacht Education 2017-2022.
The Advisory Committee for the Policy on Gaeltacht Education, chaired by the Department of Education, will provide ongoing advice to the Gaeltacht Education Unit on the staged implementation of the Policy on Gaeltacht Education 2017-2022.
