Asbestos is a hazardous material that can have serious long-term detrimental effects on the health of persons exposed to its fibres. It is classified as a Class 1 carcinogen.
School authorities must ensure that only approved asbestos removal contractors are used for the removal and disposal of asbestos material if required from their schools during any building or refurbishment project and under no circumstance should an unapproved contractor be used. A list of competent asbestos contractors and technical advisers as well as further guidelines are listed below.
The removal and disposal of asbestos materials is the subject of regulation, primarily the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations, 2006 S.I. no. 504 of 2006 and the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Exposure to Asbestos) (Amendment) Regulation 2010 S.I. no. 589/2010. The supervision and removal of these materials, along with their disposal, are subject to strict procedures and must be undertaken by competent persons only.
The Department provided grant aid to school management authorities to assist them with the removal of asbestos materials where necessary.
