Information & Communications Technology (ICT) in Schools

There is a problem with the broadband connection in a school, who looks after this?

The Broadband Service Desk is the single point to contact for schools for all broadband related issues, providing information, advice and support to schools. The contact number for the Service Desk is 1800 334466. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the Schools Broadband Access programme is also provided.

Are any ICT infrastructure grants available?

Under the most recent ICT infrastructure grant scheme, some €92m was distributed to primary and post-primary schools between November 2009 and December 2010. This scheme is now closed and there are currently no plans to introduce a new national ICT infrastructure grant scheme. Guidance for schools which have yet to submit expenditure returns under the 2009/10 ICT Infrastructure Grant scheme is available at links:

While there is no general-purpose ICT infrastructure grant scheme at present, schools may however spend Minor Works grants and Capitation grants on ICT equipment, and spend Book Grants on digital books. The Department’s building unit provides ICT funding in connection with new classroom and new school construction projects specifically.

Assistive technology grants are also available for individual students with special educational needs. Applications for this funding must be made by the local Special Educational Needs Organiser (SENO).

There is a wealth of guidance and planning tools – specifically developed for schools - on PDST Technology in Education website.
