16 March, 2017 - Minister Bruton announces re-appointment of David O'Callaghan as chairperson of Caranua - the Residential Institutions Statutory Fund

The Minister for Education and Skills, Mr Richard Bruton T.D., today announced the re-appointment of Mr David O’Callaghan as chairperson of Caranua - the Residential Institutions Statutory Fund for a period not exceeding four years. Mr O’Callaghan was initially appointed as Chairperson in February 2014.

The process of appointing members to a new Board is currently underway and is being managed by the Public Appointments Service (PAS).

Caranua was established under the Residential Institutions Statutory Fund Act 2012 to oversee the use of up to €110 million in cash contributions pledged by religious congregations to support the needs of survivors of residential institutional child abuse.

The supports available include the provision of a range of approved services, including health and personal social services, education and housing services. Further details are available on the Board’s website www.caranua.ie.

Mr O’Callaghan is a former Secretary General of the Department of Defence and a former chair of the Irish Red Cross

Minister Bruton thanked Mr O’Callaghan for agreeing to accept a further appointment as Chairperson and he thanked him for his work to date in the role.
