13 February, 2015 - Statement in relation to Travers Report

The Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan, this evening stated her positive disposition to the Travers Report.

“Having considered Dr. Travers document I believe it goes a long way to framing a fair and equitable solution to the issues regarding the implementation of Junior Cycle reform. While I will seek clarification on some points it is a positive development.

“I am disappointed at the initial reaction of both teaching unions to the document.  It is intended to be a draft agreement, not a starting point for negotiations. However, I understand Dr. Travers is available to both sides for clarification next week in advance of the Thursday deadline which Dr. Travers has set for acceptance or rejection of the document by both sides, and I await the outcome of this engagement.

“Today my officials met a number of education partners including students’ representatives, the National Parents Council and management bodies.  While they have yet to give full consideration to the report by Dr. Travers the general view was very positive toward the report.

Ends.
