The Minister for Research and Innovation, Seán Sherlock T.D., today opened the Irish Research Council’s Annual Symposium. The event is being held as part of CareerZoo 2013 and showcases the excellent and innovative research being undertaken by researchers funded by the Irish Research Council. It also provides researchers with concrete information and advice on future career and funding opportunities.

Speaking at the event, the Minister said that, “As part of our investment in research, we must ensure that we have the structures and conditions in place that will support and develop researchers at various stages in their careers and for a broad range of careers – be it in the higher education system, in industry or as entrepreneurs.”

Congratulating the Irish Research Council on its work to date, the Minister added, “The Council is nurturing the next generation of Irish researchers, promoting inter-disciplinary research, enhancing collaboration with enterprise, leveraging EU funding, and providing a strong voice for the promotion and support of emerging researchers in Ireland.”

The Minister also commended the Council on developing its range of innovative funding schemes such as the Enterprise Partnership Scheme and the Employment Based Scheme which facilitate research collaboration, knowledge transfer and networking between Irish based enterprise and researchers.

The Minister also presented the winners of the digital poster competition on 'Why my Research Matters'. The competition required researchers to communicate their research effectively to the public on exactly what they are researching and the impact of the research for society.
