25 May, 2009 - Minister O'Keeffe launches new German website for schools

The Minister for Education and Science, Batt O'Keeffe TD, this morning launched a new website for schools, www.german.ie, at Coláiste Choilm, Ballincollig, Co Cork.

The website is an online resource created for teachers and students of German in Ireland under the auspices of the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) and is part of the Scoilnet portal.

It was developed as a result of a collaboration between the Department of Education and Science, Scoilnet, the Goethe Institute, the German Teachers' Association and the Austrian Embassy in Ireland.

Speaking at the launch of the new website, Minister O'Keeffe emphasised the importance of learning languages in today's multicultural Ireland.

'As citizens of Europe it is part of a well-rounded education to become familiar with the language and culture of our fellow Europeans.'

Minister O'Keeffe acknowledged the commitment of the staff of the German department in Coláiste Choilm where over 800 students study the language.

'It is appropriate that this innovative website is being launched here today, where the German department is proudly celebrating 21 years of excellence in the teaching and learning of German.'

He congratulated those behind the website's development and thanked the NCTE, Goethe Institute and the Austrian Embassy for their participation in the project.
