18 December, 2007 - C&AG’s Report on Management Information Systems in the Institute of Technology Sector

The report of the Comptroller and Auditor General on the implementation of management information systems in the Institutes of Technology sector has been laid before both Houses of the Oireachtas today.

The report examines the procurement and implementation of new systems in the Institutes of Technology to cover student administration, financial management, personnel management and library management.

Minister for Education and Science, Mary Hanafin, T.D., said "the C&AG report concludes that this project has been successful in implementing systems which provide a platform for the better management and operation of the Institutes of Technology. The report also acknowledges that this was no mean achievement given the autonomous status of the organisations. The foresight of the Institutes in recognising the value of working together to develop this system is to be commended."

Minister Hanafin went on to say "The report points to a number of weaknesses in the initial years of this project. A review was carried out at an early stage in the project and the report acknowledges that corrective action was taken to address identified weaknesses through the adoption of a revised plan, budget and governance structure for the project. Issues raised in this report will inform further developments in the Institutes building on this project and the planning and management of similar projects in the future."
