22 September, 2006 - Minister Hanafin presents awards to students at School Annual Prize Giving Day
Minister for Education and Science, Mary Hanafin, T.D., today attended the annual Dundalk Grammar School prize giving ceremony at Dundalk Institute of Technology.
Dundalk Grammar School has a current enrolment of more than 500 pupils - approximately 100 of these are boarders - and the original school is a Georgian building which is protected by a listing.
Prizes were awarded in the areas of computer skills, hockey coaching, debating, music, community service, environmental awareness, business and work experience. "I am particularly struck by the range of talents being recognised here today. This is reflective of the emphasis which the school attaches to the education and development of the whole person and you should be very proud of that" said Minister Hanafin.
Acknowledging the school's involvement in cross border events, Minister Hanafin said "I know that your wonderful orchestra has linked up with schools in Newry to stage concerts. Such links, and the contribution they make to cross border co-operation in the area of education, cannot be underestimated. You also organise and take part in cross border trade and enterprise fairs which involve public speaking, debating and drama. These are magnificent learning opportunities for you."
Dundalk Grammar school works very closely with parents and in 1998 the parent-teacher association was established. Highlighting the important role parents play in their children's education, Minister Hanafin said "your parent-teacher association does sterling work and I would like to congratulate you on the contribution you have made to the development of the school."
