08 September, 2006 - Graduation Time at Sallynoggin College of Further Education

Minister Síle de Valera T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Education and Science, was at Sallynoggin College of Further Education today to deliver the closing speech at the college's Annual Graduation Ceremony.

Over the years Sallynoggin College of Further Education has earned a reputation for the quality courses it runs. The college offers students a variety of Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) programmes ranging from computers to hairdressing and beauty to sport leisure and fitness. The college's popularity is evident in the fact that student numbers have increased by 40% in recent years.
Minister de Valera said "PLC courses give students a number of options. Graduates can start their work careers with the necessary skills or can continue their studies at third level. Indeed, one former graduate of Sallynoggin College of Further Education went on to study at the Dublin Institute of Technology where she did a degree, a masters and is currently working on a PhD."

The Minister went onto say, "PLC programmes have also become an important re-entry route for older adults wishing to return to education. Over 40% of PLC students are over 21 years of age. There are currently more than 200 centres throughout the country that offer PLC courses. This corresponds to over 30,000 places. With a wide range of courses available there really is something for everyone."

The Minister concluded by congratulating the 200 students graduating from the college. "I offer my best wishes to the graduates. Today is important milestone in your lives and you should be very proud of what you have achieved. I would also like to congratulate the staff at the college for their hard work and commitment. While it is the end of an era for the students graduating, a whole new set of students will soon be beginning their college lives. Exciting times lie ahead for all involved with Sallynoggin College of Further Education."
