03 July, 2006 - Government Boost for Gaeltacht Economies as Record Numbers set to attend Cursaí Samhraidh

Minister Hanafin and Ó Cuív announce €6.25 million funding for over 27,000 Gaeltacht course participants

Record numbers of students are heading to Gaeltacht areas this week for the start of the July Irish summer courses. Government funding to support participants is being increased this year with €6.25 million being announced today by two Government Ministers in direct support for summer courses in each of the country's gaeltacht areas.   It is estimated that for every €1 invested by the State, at least €1.50 is attracted from the private sector.

The joint funding announcement was made today by Éamon Ó Cuív, T.D., Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, and Mary Hanafin T.D., Minister for Education and Science.  This funding will enable more than 27,000 young people between the ages of 8 and 18, along with public servants, teachers and student teachers to participate in gaeltacht based cursaí samhraidh over the Summer period.  The expected influx of students over the summer months is seen as an enormous boost to local economies in these areas.

The two Government Departments will be providing direct financial supports to the coláistaí samhraidh (summer colleges) to contribute to tuition costs and other overheads in respect of the expected 27,000 course participants.  Included among these will be some 1,500 trainee teachers who will each receive individual grants of €600.  Some 25,000 others, made up of predominantly second level students, gardaí, army personnel and other professionals, will benefit from the assistance of government tuition fee subsidies paid directly to their course providers.

Announcing the funding Minister Hanafin said 'each year these summer colleges provide an extremely valuable service in promoting and maintaining high standards in the Irish language. Thousands of people are encouraged every summer to improve and maintain their own Irish language skills while immersing themselves in the culture, traditions and craic of our gaeltacht communities.'

Minister Ó Cuív added  'in addition to the language and social benefits of widespread participation on the courses, the Government is conscious of the socio-economic benefits of this funding support for the people living in the gaeltacht communities where these courses operate.  The presence of 27,000 course participants over the summer months will be a considerable boost to these areas in providing employment and income for local businesses, mná na tí and those directly involved in delivering the courses.'

An expected 460 gaeltacht course participants from the public and civil service will receive grants of €125 each together with five days' paid annual leave under the Department of Finance gaeleagras programme.    In addition, an estimated 600 qualified teachers who participate on recognised Irish language summer courses of five days' duration, for personal professional development in line with the requirements of the revised primary curriculum, will receive an additional three days' annual leave under the Department of Education and Science's Extra Personal Vacation (EPV) scheme.

Under the Irish Learners Scheme administered by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs a daily grant per student is payable to households in the Gaeltacht that accommodate students attending recognised Irish courses.  All income from the scheme is exempt from income tax.
