01 July, 2006 - Minister Hanafin attends Somme Commemorations in France
The Minister for Education and Science Mary Hanafin T.D., today represents the Irish Government at the ceremonies taking place in Thiepval and Guillemont to commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
Minister Hanafin spoke of the importance of today's ceremonies:
'I am honoured to represent the Irish Government at today's ceremonies to remember those from all over Ireland and elsewhere who fought at the Somme.
The Battle of the Somme was a central event in the history of the world and of our island. Many Irish people come from families who lost loved ones in the Great War.
Today we are recognising their proud place in Irish history.
There will be similar ceremonies in Belfast and, for the first time, a formal State Commemoration in Dublin which will be attended by people from all over the island of Ireland.
This is a mark of the transformed relationships between North and South and between Ireland and Britain.'
Minister Hanafin, who was a teacher of History and Irish at Dominican College, Sion Hill, Blackrock before being elected to the Dáil Éireann in 1997, also spoke about the importance of ensuring that students learn, understand and do not forget the reality of war:
'The purpose of teaching and learning about shared history is to ensure that future generations can see the perils, horror and the reality of war as well as to empathise with those involved and with their ideals.
In the Ireland of today, we can look at all aspects of our history with maturity. There is a far greater understanding of our shared history. This can help us build new relationships and friendships and a shared future based on peace and mutual respect.'
