20 June, 2006 - STEPS to Engineering K’Nex Challenge is a very important event in the science, technology and engineering education calendar for schools – Minister de Valera

Minister for Youth Affairs at the Department of Education and Science, Síle de Valera, T.D., today attended the National Final of the STEPS to Engineering K'Nex Challenge 2006, in Dublin City University.

Speaking at the event Minister de Valera said

'This event gives primary school children an opportunity to experience in a practical 'hands on' way the world of engineering and science and promotes the world of engineering in an exciting, interesting and enjoyable way.'

'Engineering will play an important part in the future development of our country and our economy.  Innovation and technological development are the key to safeguarding and enhancing all our futures.' 

'I am delighted to see how popular this event is.  15,000 pupils in 500 schools participated in the event this year, double the number who participated last year.'

'In addition to your own sense of fulfilment, your achievement in reaching the national final represents an honour for your school and I am sure is a source of pride for your teachers and parents.'
