Special Needs Assistant (SNA) Redundancy Scheme
The redundancy arrangements for Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) were agreed at a national level at the Labour Relations Commission. These arrangements provide for redundancy compensation to be applied to SNAs employed in primary and second level schools in approved posts with more than one year’s continuous service.
The employment of SNAs may be reduced from full-time to part-time or terminated by way of redundancy where the approved allocation to the school is reduced and it is necessary to compulsorily cease / reduce the employment of an SNA. A redundancy situation arises where the post ceases to exist / is reduced and the SNA is not replaced. Unless the most junior SNA in the school has a written child specific contract that entitles them to remain in the school, the selection criteria for redundancy is on a 'last in first out' basis.
