Post Primary Teacher Education Programmes
The Department of Education and Skills in collaboration with the Higher Education Institutions has expanded the number of places available on post primary teacher education courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level by 380 places. The additional places are available from this autumn and applications are now being accepted. The successful completion of an approved initial teacher education programme will qualify a graduate to register as a teacher with the Teaching Council (www.teachingcouncil.ie).

STEM, Irish and foreign languages are being prioritised in line with the Government’s national priorities.
If you are graduating from a third level programme with subjects that meet the Teaching Council’s subject criteria, or sitting the Leaving Certificate this year, you still have time to apply for a place on either a post primary Professional Master in Education (PME) programme in the priority subjects or an undergraduate post primary initial teacher education programme.
Post Primary Professional Master of Education (PME)
The closing date for applications to initial teacher education postgraduate programmes (Professional Master of Education (PME)) has been extended to 12 noon on 13April 2018 for the priority subjects which are: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Irish, German, French, Italian and Spanish.

Undergraduate Post Primary Initial Teacher Education Programmes
If you are considering an undergraduate initial teacher education programme and have already applied to the CAO, please note that the CAO “change of mind” facility is available until 1 July 2018. If you have not yet applied to the CAO, the closing date for late applications is 1st May, 2018 (17:15 hrs).

Prospective candidates for the PME should note that Teaching Council regulations require that candidates hold a Level 8 degree (or equivalent) and also meet the requirements for at least one post-primary curricular subject. The requirements for qualifying subjects are available on the Teaching Council’s website (www.teachingcouncil.ie).
Prospective candidates for undergraduate programmes should check that they meet the minimum entry requirements for their chosen course. These are available on the CAO website (www.cao.ie) and from the HEIs offering the courses (websites listed above).
Please note that all applicants to Teacher Education programmes will need to be Garda Vetted.
