29 September, 2005 - Minister Hanafin announces €555m spend on education projects under public private partnership

€300 million for 23 New Post Primary Schools
and
4 New Primary Schools,
€255m for Third Level projects

The Minister for Education and Science Mary Hanafin T.D. today announced her plans to provide 23 new post-primary schools and 4 new primary schools under a major expansion of the Government’s Public Private Partnership Programme (PPP) from 2006 to 2009. Minister Hanafin also announced that she is allocating €255m for delivery of Third Level projects using the PPP model.

Speaking today the Minister said that “The projects targeted for delivery involve new schools in rapidly developing areas, replacements for existing schools and new accommodation for schools formed by the amalgamation of existing schools and priority projects in the third level sector.

This major multi-annual programme is another key milestone in delivering on the Government’s commitment to school building and modernisation set out in the programme for Government.” continued Minister Hanafin.

Highlighting the fact that this was the first time a number of primary school building projects would be delivered under the public private partnership model Minister Hanafin said “this is a new initiative using the PPP model to provide primary schools in a campus sharing context with a new post-primary school.

Explaining how the process will operate Minister Hanafin said “ while the National Development Finance Agency (NDFA) will have responsibility for the procurement of projects, timing and the grouping of projects into bundles will be determined by my Department in consultation with the Agency.

The first school bundle under this programme will go to the market in the first half of 2006 and the first third level bundle later in 2006.”

Details of the third level projects and institutions concerned will be announced next month.
