Post Primary Teacher Training - Information on entry to Postgraduate Diploma in Education/Graduate Diploma in Education/Higher Diploma in Education

General Information

The Postgraduate Diploma in Education / Graduate Diploma in Education / Higher Diploma in Education (Secondary) is a required qualification for all teaching posts in secondary, community and comprehensive schools.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Education is offered by the Education Departments of:

The four constituent universities of the National University of Ireland

  • University College Cork - National University of Ireland, Cork
  • University College Dublin - National University of Ireland, Dublin
  • National University of Ireland, Galway
  • National University of Ireland, Maynooth

The Graduate Diploma in Education is offered by

  • Dublin City University

The Higher Diploma in Education (Secondary) is offered by

  • The University of Dublin  / Trinity College

The Postgraduate Diploma in Education through Irish (Dioplóma Iarchéime san Oideachas) is available in

  • The National University of Ireland, Galway.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible to apply for the Post Graduate Diploma in Education / Graduate Diploma in Education / Higher Diploma in Education (Secondary), candidates must have obtained a suitable Primary Degree.  A suitable Primary Degree is a degree or equivalent award from a State recognised university or similar third level college which is adequate to enable the holder to teach to the highest level (in the case of the majority of subjects, this is Leaving Certificate, higher level) in at least one subject on the post-primary school curriculum   The duration of such a degree programme must be at least three years of full-time study or equivalent.  The applicant's degree must be deemed eligible by "The Teaching Council" for the purposes of secondary school teaching.

Applicants who are uncertain about any issue regarding the recognition of their degree should contact The Teaching Council.  Those who have not yet completed their degree at the time of applying are evaluated on the examination results of the most recently completed academic year.

National University of Ireland (Cork, Dublin, Galway and Maynooth)

The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (NUI) Applications Centre was founded in 1998 to accept applications for admission to postgraduate courses in the four constituent universities of the National University of Ireland.  The Centre accepts and processes applications centrally for the Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

The Graduate Diploma in Education is a part-time programme taking place over 2 years.  The part-time nature of this programme will allow students to work full-time while studying at DCU.
