Listed below is the legislation for which the Department has been responsible since the foundation of the State. There are a small number of enactments predating independence such as the Intermediate Education Acts and the Children Act, 1908 (in part). Some recent legislation remains in part or total to be commenced, but plans are being made in relation to those (see *).

Universities (Amendment) Bill
Drafting work based on the General Scheme of the Bill which was approved by Government in October 2012 is underway.
Draft Scheme for an Education (Admission to School) Bill 2013
In September 2013, the Minister published a draft General Scheme for an Education (Admission to Schools) Bill, 2013 as well as draft regulations for discussion ahead of enacting legislation. The draft General Scheme and draft regulations were referred to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection, to allow a full public discussion, including inputs from parents and the education partners. Teaching Council (Amendment) Bill, 2015
The Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O'Sullivan T.D. published the Teaching Council Amendment Bill, 2015 on 23rd January 2015.
The Bill, which is included in the Government's legislative programme for the current Spring/Summer session, caters for two main overarching aims: underpinning the central role of the Teaching Council in the forthcoming statutory vetting arrangements for registered teachers and amending and strengthening the statutory provisions relating to the Teaching Council's Fitness to Teach function.
